Steel Products QCO Amendment Offers Compliance Flexibility for Importers

The Ministry of Steel has promulgated an amendment to the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, introducing revised compliance timelines and category-specific exemptions designed to reduce the burden on small and medium manufacturers while maintaining product quality standards. Key Highlights of the Amendment: • Extended timelines for implementation of BIS certification for select steel product categories • New provisions for steel importers using ISP-certified input materials • Clarification on exemption criteria for project-specific steel imports • Revised mandatory testing requirements for imported steel FGMS Analysis: This amendment presents both opportunities and compliance requirements for stakeholders in the steel value chain. Manufacturers using Indian Steel Producers (ISPs) as a source for input materials may qualify for expedited or simplified BIS licence processes.
