E-Waste Management (EPR)

E-Waste Management (EPR)

REGISTRATION
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for e-waste is governed by the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022, which took effect on April 1, 2023. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) administers EPR registration for producers, importers, and brand owners (PIBOs) of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) across approximately 134 product categories including computing equipment, consumer electronics, and household appliances.Registered entities must meet annual e-waste collection targets by channelling end-of-life equipment to CPCB-authorised recyclers or dismantlers. EPR obligations can be fulfilled either through direct tie-ups with authorised recycling facilities or by purchasing EPR certificates on the CPCB EPR portal from registered recyclers.Registration is applied for offline via Form 1 submitted to CPCB. The grant timeline is approximately 120 days. The EPR authorisation is valid for five years and is renewable. Non-compliance with collection targets attracts environmental compensation penalties.Compliance ObligationsAnnual e-waste collection and channelisation targetsQuarterly and annual compliance reporting to CPCBRecord maintenance with authorised recyclers and dismantlersDisplay of EPR registration number on products and packaging
