The Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing, established under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in 1952, is India's national radio frequency management authority. The Equipment Type Approval (ETA) is mandatory for all wireless communication devices operating in de-licensed frequency bands — including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and cellular technologies — before they can be legally marketed or imported into India.Certain device categories including mobile phones, laptops, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds are eligible for Self-Declaration ETA, where the applicant certifies conformity under their own responsibility without requiring a separate import licence. For other categories, a formal ETA application must be filed with WPC supported by RF test reports from an NABL or ILAC-accredited laboratory.All ETA applications are submitted through the Saral Sanchar portal — the government's single-window platform for telecom product approvals.
