World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) Code

A World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) is the first three characters of a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), uniquely identifying the vehicle manufacturer. WMI codes are assigned by SAE International and coordinated in India by BIS; all Indian vehicle manufacturers are required to obtain a WMI under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

A World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) comprises the first three characters of a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), globally and uniquely identifying each vehicle manufacturer. VINs were standardised by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 1981 and are governed internationally by ISO 3779 (VIN content and structure) and ISO 3780 (WMI code assignment).WMI codes are assigned by SAE International in the United States. In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) serves as the national WMI coordinator, receives applications from Indian manufacturers, and submits proposals on their behalf to SAE.
