The Ecomark is India's national eco-labelling scheme, launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) to identify products that are less harmful to the environment across their entire life cycle — from raw material extraction through manufacturing, use, and disposal. The scheme is operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which grants the distinctive earthen pot logo to certified products meeting prescribed environmental criteria.
Ecomark criteria are developed product-category by product-category, assessing environmental performance on parameters such as hazardous substance content, energy efficiency, recyclability, biodegradability, water usage, and packaging sustainability. Products carrying the Ecomark must also meet minimum performance standards — they cannot be eco-labelled if they underperform conventional alternatives in their primary function.
