BIS Hallmarking

BIS Hallmarking certifies the purity of gold and silver jewellery under Indian Standards. Mandatory for all gold jewellery retailers since June 2021, each hallmarked article carries the BIS logo, a purity code, and a unique HUID alphanumeric identifier.

What is BIS Hallmarking?

BIS Hallmarking is the process of certifying the purity of precious metal articles — primarily gold, silver, and platinum jewellery — by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS (Hallmarking) Regulations 2018. Administered under the BIS Act 2016 and governed by IS 1417 (for gold alloys), hallmarking provides consumers with a verifiable assurance of the metal purity declared by the jeweller.

The hallmark stamped on a piece of jewellery contains: the BIS logo (triangle), the fineness/purity number (e.g., 916 for 22 Karat gold), and a unique 6-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number which can be verified using the BIS Care App. This system ensures complete traceability from the jeweller to the assaying centre for every individual piece of jewellery sold in India.

Mandatory since June 2021: Gold jewellery sold in India must carry mandatory BIS Hallmarking. Violation attracts fines up to ₹1 lakh or 5× the value of non-hallmarked goods — whichever is higher — under the BIS Act 2016.

Our Process

1
Jeweller Registration with BIS
We assist jewellers in registering on the BIS portal and obtaining a unique Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number for each piece of jewellery from a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC).
2
Document Preparation
We compile all required documents: business registration proof, KYC, GST certificate, shop/establishment licence, product details, and authorisation forms for BIS entity registration.
3
Article Submission to AHC
Jewellery articles are submitted to the nearest BIS-authorised Assaying & Hallmarking Centre (AHC) for assay testing to determine precious metal purity.
4
Assay Testing & Purity Grading
The AHC tests the purity of gold/silver/platinum using fire assay or XRF analysis and assigns the standard fineness number (e.g., 916 for 22K gold).
5
Hallmark Stamping
Verified articles are stamped with the BIS Hallmark: BIS logo, fineness mark, HUID number. Each piece receives a unique 6-character alphanumeric HUID traceable on the BIS Care App.
6
Compliance & Renewal
FGMS ensures timely renewal of BIS entity registration and advises on compliance with Hallmarking (Amendment) Rules. We maintain records of all HUID-stamped pieces for audit purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. BIS Hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery of 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K, and 24K fineness in India since June 16, 2021. All jewellers selling gold jewellery must register with BIS and sell only BIS-hallmarked jewellery. Non-compliance attracts fines and seizure of stock.

HUID is a 6-character alphanumeric code stamped on each piece of hallmarked jewellery. It uniquely identifies the piece and links it to the jeweller, AHC, and assay data. Consumers can verify HUID authenticity using the BIS Care mobile app. All gold jewellery sold in India must carry a 6-digit HUID from July 2022 onwards.

Gold jewellery is hallmarked at six purity levels: 999 (24K), 995, 916 (22K), 875 (21K), 750 (18K), and 585 (14K). The fineness number is stamped directly on the piece alongside the BIS logo and the HUID.

Yes. Jewellery for export, government-approved institutional buyers, and government-to-government or defence-related items are exempt. Jewellery manufactured before June 2021 may have a grace period sell-through, subject to current BIS guidelines.

BIS charges a flat hallmarking fee per piece — currently ₹45 per article — which is paid to the AHC. Additionally, jewellers must pay BIS entity registration fees (one-time and renewal). FGMS charges are for registration assistance and compliance management.
