BIS (CRS) Registration For Electronic Products

The BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) mandates quality certification for 79+ electronics and IT product categories sold in India. Registration is based on self-declaration supported by a valid laboratory test report; no factory audit is required, and the certificate is granted within approximately 20 working days.

What is BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme)?

The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), also known as the BIS Registration Scheme, is a mandatory product certification programme under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for electronics and IT products sold in India. Under CRS, manufacturers and importers must register each product model with BIS and display the BIS CRS Mark (Registration Mark) on the product and its packaging before it can be legally sold in India.

CRS was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to curb the influx of substandard, unsafe electronic and IT products into India. Unlike the ISI Mark scheme (which requires factory inspections), CRS follows a self-declaration model — the manufacturer/importer declares product conformity based on test reports from a BIS-recognised laboratory and registers the model on the BIS portal.

As of 2025, 70+ product categories are covered under mandatory CRS, and the government regularly adds new product categories. Non-compliance attracts penalties under the BIS Act 2016, and CRS-mandated products are checked at Indian customs for registration evidence.

Customs Alert: CRS-registered products must carry the BIS registration mark and declare the R-Number on the import invoice. Consignments without valid CRS registration are held at customs and may be confiscated or returned.

Our Process

1
Product Eligibility Check
We assess whether your product falls under the CRS mandatory category and identify the applicable Indian Standard (IS) and EMC/Safety requirements.
2
Sample Testing
Product samples are tested at a BIS-recognised, STQC, or NABL-accredited laboratory against applicable IS. We coordinate sample dispatch, tracking, and report collection.
3
Document Preparation
Complete technical file preparation including test reports, product specifications, regulatory declarations, and company credentials as per BIS CRS checklist.
4
BIS Portal Application
We file the application on the BIS portal, upload all documents, and pay the registration fees. Each model is registered individually with a unique R-number.
5
Query Resolution
We handle all BIS queries and provide clarifications to ensure smooth registration without rejection. Our team monitors application status daily.
6
R-Number Certificate
BIS issues the Registration Certificate (R-Number) for each model. Products can then be labelled with the BIS CRS mark and are cleared for import/sale in India.
7
Renewal Every 2 Years
CRS registrations must be renewed every 2 years. FGMS tracks all renewal deadlines and manages renewals proactively to ensure your products remain compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Currently 70+ product categories require mandatory BIS CRS registration. These include mobile phones, tablets, laptops, LED lights/lamps/fixtures, power banks, smart wearables, printers, routers, CCTV cameras, power supplies, TVs, set-top boxes, audio-visual equipment, UPS systems, and many more. The list is regularly expanded by the government.

CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) uses a self-declaration model with BIS registration — the manufacturer/importer registers each model and attaches a registration certificate. ISI Mark (Product Certification) requires factory inspections by BIS officers and ongoing surveillance. CRS is primarily for electronics and IT products, while ISI Mark covers a wider industrial product range.

Yes. Both domestic manufacturers and importers can apply for CRS registration. For importers, an authorization letter from the overseas manufacturer is required. FGMS can act as the authorized representative for overseas manufacturers in the CRS registration process.

With complete documents and a BIS-accepted test report, CRS registration typically takes 2–4 weeks. Testing may take an additional 3–6 weeks depending on the lab and product complexity. FGMS ensures the fastest turnaround by preparing complete applications the first time.

Selling or importing a CRS-mandated product without BIS registration is punishable under the BIS Act 2016. Products can be seized by enforcement authorities, and the responsible entity faces fines and legal action. Additionally, customs authorities check for CRS compliance at import stage.

Yes. CRS registration is model-specific — each model/variant must be individually registered with BIS and receives its own unique R-Number. All registered models must display the BIS CRS mark on the product and packaging.
