The Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit lifetime registration number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Any business entity or individual engaged in importing goods into India or exporting goods from India must possess a valid IEC. The code never expires and does not require periodic renewal once issued.IEC registration enables businesses to: clear import shipments through Indian customs; remit and receive foreign currency through Indian banking channels; access export promotion benefits and incentive schemes administered by DGFT, Export Promotion Councils, and the Customs department; and participate in export-import programmes such as Advance Authorisation and EPCG licences.GST-registered traders may use their PAN as a deemed IEC for personal non-commercial use; however, all commercial import/export transactions require a formal IEC registration.Applications are filed using Aayaat Niryaat Form ANF-2A, submitted to the relevant DGFT Regional Authority with a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
