What is BEE Star Rating Certification?

The BEE Stars & Labelling Programme is administered by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. Under this programme, specified electrical appliances and equipment must be tested for energy performance and display a BEE Star Rating Label — showing 1 to 5 stars — before they can be legally sold in India. Higher stars indicate greater energy efficiency.

The programme serves dual purposes: it empowers consumers to make informed, energy-efficient purchasing choices; and it drives manufacturers to continuously improve product energy performance. Mandatory star labelling is governed by the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 and the BEE Standards & Labelling Programme. Currently 21+ product categories are under mandatory labelling, with more categories being added regularly.

Applicability Check

Energy Testing at BEE Lab

Product is tested at a BEE-empanelled or NABL-accredited laboratory for energy performance parameters (EER, COP, lumen efficacy, power factor, etc.) as applicable.

Application Preparation

BEE Portal Submission

Star Rating Granted

Annual Update & Renewal

Mandatory labelling requires star rating before a product can be sold — products without a label cannot enter the market. Voluntary labelling allows manufacturers to voluntarily get rated and display stars for competitive advantage. Mandatory products are governed by Energy Conservation Act 2001.

MEPS stands for Minimum Energy Performance Standard. It defines the minimum acceptable energy efficiency level for products under BEE mandatory programme. Products failing to meet MEPS cannot be sold in India, regardless of star count.

Each product category has its own energy metric — for example, Air Conditioners use ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), refrigerators use annual energy consumption (kWh/year), and fans use service value (CMF/W). Products are placed in star bands (1–5 stars) based on measured performance against BEE's published star criterion bands.

Yes. BEE star rating plans are typically valid for 1–2 years. BEE periodically enhances the star criteria (making it harder to achieve higher stars) to drive continuous product improvement. Manufacturers must re-test and re-register to maintain compliance as criteria evolve.
