The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established on 5 August 2011 under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, operating under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. FSSAI is the apex regulatory body responsible for monitoring, governing, and enforcing food safety standards across the entire food supply chain — covering manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and import of food products.Any individual or business entity that manufactures, processes, packages, distributes, stores, or imports food products must obtain a valid FSSAI registration or licence before commencing food business operations. FSSAI issues three types of food business authorisation based on the scale of operations:Basic Registration: Issued by the State Government to small food businesses (annual turnover below ₹12 lakh). Valid for 1–5 years. Issued within approximately 7 working days.State Licence: Issued by the State Government to medium-scale businesses with turnover of ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore, operating within a single state. Processing time: 15–30 days.Central Licence: Issued by the Central Government for large FBOs (turnover above ₹20 crore), multi-state operators, food exporters, and importers. Processing time: 30–60 days.All licences and registrations are valid for the fee period selected (1–5 years). Renewal applications must be submitted at least 30 days before expiry.
