The Type Approval Certificate (TAC) is mandatory for automotive components and systems under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, administered by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), established in 1966 in Pune, is the primary testing and type approval agency for automotive products in India.TAC certification applies to a broad range of automotive products including automotive electronics, gasoline tanks, safety glass, tyres, seat belts, brake hoses, lighting assemblies, batteries, and door lock mechanisms. It applies equally to domestic manufacturers, importers, dealers, and overseas manufacturers selling in India.The certification workflow progresses through product testing at an ARAI-approved laboratory, a factory audit at the production premises, and issuance of the Type Approval Certificate by ARAI.
