REGISTRATION

The Legal Metrology Act 2009 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 govern the weights, measures, and labelling requirements for pre-packaged goods distributed in India. Three principal licence categories exist under the Act: Manufacturer (of weights and measures), Repairer (of weights and measures), and Dealer (of weights and measures). Any entity that manufactures, imports, or packs commodities in pre-packaged form for retail sale must additionally obtain a Packaged Commodity Registration (PCR) under Rule 27.PCR Rule 27 applies broadly across packaged food products, consumer electronics, personal care items, and household goods.
