UL Certification (USA)

UL Certification from Underwriters Laboratories independently verifies product safety for US and international markets. Approximately 14 billion UL-marked products are sold annually; the process requires product testing against UL standards, a factory audit, and annual follow-up surveillance inspections.

UL Certification — Gateway to the US & North American Market

UL (Underwriters Laboratories / UL Solutions) is the world's foremost product safety certification organisation, recognisable by the iconic circular UL mark on billions of products worldwide. Founded in Chicago in 1894, UL sets safety standards, tests products, and certifies conformity for electrical, electronic, mechanical, and industrial products sold in the United States, Canada, and international markets that accept UL marks.

For Indian manufacturers exporting to North America, the UL Listed mark is not merely a competitive differentiator — it is often a practical prerequisite. US big-box retailers, e-commerce platforms, building inspectors, fire marshals, insurance companies, and enterprise buyers consistently require or expect UL certification for electrical products, lighting, appliances, electronics, and industrial equipment. FGMS coordinates the full UL certification process on behalf of Indian manufacturers — managing everything from lab selection and test coordination in the USA to UL project management and factory inspection preparation.

Our Process

1
Standard & Mark Selection
We identify the applicable UL product safety standard for your product and determine the correct UL listing mark — UL Listed, UL Recognized Component, UL Classified, or UL Verified.
2
UL Product Testing
Product samples are tested at UL-accredited laboratories (UL Solutions facilities or UL-recognised Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories — NRTLs) against the applicable UL/ANSI standard.
3
Technical Documentation
We prepare the technical file: product descriptions, engineering drawings, component specifications, construction details, and any manufacturing process information required by UL.
4
UL Factory Follow-Up (FFU)
UL requires periodic factory inspections (Follow-Up Services / FFU) to verify that production maintains the certified design. We prepare your factory for UL inspections.
5
UL Application & Certification
Application submitted through UL's online portal (myUL / UL Product iQ). We manage all UL project coordination on your behalf in the USA.
6
UL Listing Certificate
UL issues the Listing/Recognition certificate and authorises use of the UL mark on your product and packaging. Your product is listed in UL's online certification database (UL Product iQ).
7
Annual FFU & Renewal
UL certification requires annual Follow-Up Service (factory inspection) fees. Any product design changes must be submitted to UL for review. FGMS manages all ongoing UL compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is the world's oldest and most recognised product safety certification organisation, founded in 1894 in the USA. UL certification — particularly the UL Listed mark — is a market access requirement for electrical, electronic, and industrial products sold in the United States and Canada. US retailers (Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon), building codes, and insurance underwriters typically require or expect UL marks on applicable products. Indian exporters targeting the US/North American market almost universally need UL certification.

These are three distinct UL marks: (1) UL Listed — for complete, end-use products that have been tested and found to meet UL's safety requirements. Most consumer products use this mark. (2) UL Recognised Component — for components or materials used inside finished products (motors, transformers, PCBs, etc.). The Recognised mark cannot be placed on end products. (3) UL Classified — for products tested against specific hazards or specific performance standards not covered under UL listing. Each mark has specific authorized uses and placement rules.

NRTLs (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories) are OSHA-accredited laboratories authorized to test and certify products to US safety standards. UL Solutions (formerly UL itself) is the most prominent NRTL, but others include CSA Group, Intertek, TÜV SÜD, and SGS. All NRTL-certified products carry equivalent standing under OSHA safety regulations. FGMS can coordinate UL certification through UL Solutions directly or through other NRTLs with faster turnaround.

UL certification is largely voluntary by federal law, but practically mandatory due to market requirements. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.303 requires electrical equipment in workplaces to be listed or labelled by an NRTL. State electrical codes (NEC-based) in most US states require NRTL-listed electrical equipment for installation approval. US retailers almost universally require UL marks for product acceptance. Many US government agencies and military procurement specify UL listing.

UL certification timelines vary by product complexity: simple products (switches, power supplies, lighting) — 8–16 weeks. Medium complexity (appliances, industrial controls) — 12–24 weeks. Complex products (medical devices, industrial machinery) — 6–12 months. FGMS pre-screens your product and test facility to maximise first-time pass rates, reducing costly retesting and delays.
